The Dynamic of Brothers

In The Tale of Gilgamesh, Enkidu and Gilgamesh set off together in search of adventure. They, as brothers, keep each other company along the perilous path on which they embark. While on this quest, whatever it may be, Gilgamesh feels close Enkidu and confides in him about anything and everything.

For three nights, Gilgamesh dreams about startling events. In the first dream, a huge mountain falls on top of both of them. Enkidu wakes up to interpret the dream. He assuages Gilgamesh’s fears and helps console him, convincing him that there is nothing to fear. The dream is meant to be a good omen, not a bad one, and Gilgamesh has nothing to worry about. In the next, a wild bull attacks Gilgamesh. In the final one, the earth is shaking amidst the noise of thunder and lightning, and fire and ashes fall from the sky. Each time, Enkidu makes an effort to comfort Gilgamesh and ease his anxiety.

From this, it is clear that Enkidu functions not only a brother, but as the older brother. He is always the one to take care of Gilgamesh. Gilgamesh may be stronger and he may have won the fight between them for the title, but Enkidu possesses the brains and the calm mind. Together, they make up the perfect combination of smarts and strength.
