Assyrian Kings vs. Hammurabi

In comparison to the Assyrian kings to Babylonian kings, as in Hammurabi, the Assyrian kings seem to be very different in the way they rule. While Mieroop showed Hammurabi in a positive light, as a just king for the people of the ancient Near East, the Assyrian kings are depicted as controlling, harsh dictators. However, whether this is due to Mieroop’s bias should be taken into consideration, when comparing Assyrian kings to King Hammurabi.

Johannes, shows that the Assyrians were different from King Hammurabi in which they implemented their culture and values on the conquested areas. This is in contrast to Hammurabi, who allowed the people to keep their own language and customs. However, Hammurabi gained military personnel from the areas he conquered, similar to the Assyrian kings expanding military to conquer more and more land.

Johannes mentions how fear was instilled on the Assyrian people whereas Mieroop does not mention very much how Hammurabi treated his people personally. When comparing the two types of kingship, however, the reader should make sure they are not falling for the bias of the author.
